POSTED 7/25/06: Now, where were we...? Oh yeah, Wrigley Field in Chicago. Chris and Paula Payne take in the Cubs game. You'll notice Chris has a sketchbook in his lap, which he put to good use as you know if you've seen the May/June 2006 issue of The Cartoon!st.

POSTED 7/24/06: Saturday -- While Brian Walker (Beetle Bailey), Jeff Keane (Family Circus), Dan Piraro (Bizarro), Michael Jantze (The Norm) and Andrew Feinstein (Girls and Sports) participated in a panel, someone had to hold down the fort at the NCS booth. Here, Craig Boldman (Archie) is obliging a lady who needed a picture of Jughead drawn on her pants.

cont. -- Daryl Cagle (www.caglecartoons.com) found a spot to add a picture of an elephant.

cont. -- Then the lovely Melissa Bacelar (a.k.a. "Canina") paid a visit and had a quick photo shoot with Craig.

cont. -- And then a Faerie babe came along to promote her magazine, called, uh, Faerie Magazine.

cont. -- NCS member Keith Robinson (Making It ) felt he might also be of help in promoting the magazine.

cont. -- And then this convention-goer was thrilled to get a Veronica drawing. Craig credits his success with the ladies to his Wayno t-shirt, which he won at the Salt Fork meeting raffle. Thanks Wayno! Unfortunately then the panel let out and the other cartoonists came back. But it was a good hour!

POSTED 7/23/06: Still in San Diego -- By Friday the booth was in full swing. Keeping things afloat here are Daryl Cagle, Jeff Keane, Dan Piraro, and Mark Mitchell of Crow-Segal.

BONUS PIC: Jenny Robb turned up, with a blimp behind her head and wearing some kind of Olympic medal.

POSTED 7/22/06: Continuing our brief San Diego detour, here we find Luann's Greg Evans and The Family Circus' Jeff Keane putting in their time at the NCS display.

BONUS PIC: Across town, Jim Whiting, founder of the Southern California Cartoonists Society, gets things underway for their traditional Comic-Con party. Lots of NCS members and other cartoonists attended.

POSTED 7/21/06: Now for something completely different: Before getting back to the ball game, let's take a break from the break we were taking in the previous photo and leave Chicago entirely to look in on this year's typically massive San Diego Comic-Con, in, uh... San Diego. First up, an almost-live snapshot of Phil Pyster of Crow-Segal (the NCS's management company), doing prep work for the National Cartoonists Society booth at the San Diego Convention Center, taken 7/20/06.

BONUS PIC: Here's a glimpse of the booth itself. An assortment of NCS members would be rotating in and out of the display all weekend to meet and greet conventioners.

POSTED 7/20/06: Let's take a break from all that formal wear. Daryll Collins contributes this play-by-play from Sunday's field trip:

"A great time was had by all NCS members who took in the Braves-Cubs match-up at legendary Wrigley Field. It was a real thrill to experience baseball in one of the last three old-style ballparks left in the Major Leagues. A somewhat sloppy, but thrilling, game went extra innings (11) as the Braves beat the Cubs 13-12. That left the remaining NCS'ers scrambling to get to the public transit, clean up and ready for the Guisewite tribute that evening. Also, NCS President, Rick Stromoski threw out the first pitch. A perfect strike right down the middle of the plate."

POSTED 7/19/06: Who shall win this contest of wills between Michael McParlane and Chris Payne?

POSTED 7/18/06: From Creators Syndicate: Chicago-based National Sales Director Margo Sugrue, and L.A.-based Business Manager Melissa Lin.

POSTED 7/17/06: In honor of the Reuben Awards issue of The Cartoon!st which showed up in my mailbox yesterday, here's the editor of that fine journal, Frank Pauer, and his wife, Janet. Great job as usual, Frank!

POSTED 7/16/06: Seated at the Great Lakes Chapter table are chapter secretary Ed Black; Jim Allen, and... Number 34.

POSTED 7/15/06: Somebody will have to come forward and identify the gent on the far left for me. The rest of this line-up is: Andrew Pepoy, late of Annie, and currently the artist/writer of Katy Keene; Patty Mallett (letterer on Frazz) and Jef Mallett (everything else on Frazz).

POSTED 7/14/06: Ballard Street's Jerry Van Amerongen, Reuben division winner for the Newspaper Panel category, enjoys the banquet with Linda Houden.
