FRAZZ RAISES BIG BUCKS FOR BRIDGE

This from Frazz' Jef Mallett:

In my continuing apparent efforts to dispel any idea that cartoonists are sedentary types, one of my events this year is a Labor Day swim across the Straits of Mackinac. It's part of a commemoration of the Mackinac Bridge's 50th birthday. It's also a fundraiser, meaning to get into the group I had to solicit pledges (this, I'm sure, is part of the sanctioned bribery necessary to get the necessary cooperation from the many government agencies that will have to put up with 50 nut jobs swimming across a major shipping lane). I'm not comfortable asking for pledges, so I figured I'd get around it by selling Frazz originals and copies and donating that. I kind of underestimated the demand. Patty and I have had a new full-time job for the past few weeks, and Mentor Michigan will get at least $10,000 out of the deal. Not bad. I think not bad. If it takes any more time away from my training and I don't make it across the straits, then I guess that would be bad. But no worries.

SPEAKING OF PITSBURGH...

The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh will be celebrating National Cartoonist Day and Free Comic Cook Day May 5th 2007!

The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh is one of the top children's museums in the nation and has developed unique partnerships with other children's organizations and artist. There is a full broadcasting radio station on site and the museum also houses the studio of GLC member Joe Wos.

Joe will be helping to coordinate the days events and is putting out a call for cartoonists to help! He is looking for cartoonists willing to do demonstrations, performances, and signings throughout the day. Demonstrations will be no more than 20 minutes long, and signings no more than an hour.

There will be plenty of press coverage for the event and Joe promises to feed any cartoonist well. This is unpaid, however, passes to the museum will be provided for you and your family. It's a great museum and a great chance to visit Pittsburgh.

This is also a kickoff for the Allegheny County Library Association's Visual Literacy Initiative. The focus is on comic strips, graphic novels and cartoons in the library. This will be a public campaign to increase awareness of the importance of cartoons in the libraries. Joe is also helping coordinate this effort.

For more information or to offer help contact Joe directly at 412-760-1896 or email at joe@wosstudios.com
