SUPER SAM FLIES OFF THE SHELVES

With Superman on a five-year furlough from planet Earth, someone had to pick up the slack. Cue Super Sam, star of a new book illustrated by GLC vice-chair Daryll Collins.

Super Sam features three comic book stories about a kid named Sam who gains super powers after being "inked" by a giant Space Squid and "webbed" by Snap Spiders while on a field trip to a zoo on the planet Snirk.

The book, published by Innovative Kids, drawn by Daryll and written by Melanie Marks, is targeted for younger elementary school kids to help them with Phonics.

Daryll also has about 35 illustrations in the just-released 2007 Time for Kids Almanac.

Super Sam is available at the GLC Bookstore, as are many current books by chapter members.

SPRECHEN ZE ARCH?

The Archie syndicated strip is helping students learn the English language via ESL And Archie Comics, 'A Fun Place To Practice Reading And Speaking English.' Each installment of the online series showcases a sample of the daily comic strip by the GLC's Craig Boldman (and Henry Scarpelli,) and then explores the use of the language in the strip through an accompanying podcast. The instructor on the podcast also explains each gag in intricate detail, proving that at least somebody gets the joke.

Check it out HERE, if only to hear the rousing audience reaction following the punch line.

TONY CONFESSES

Tony Cochran has been "outed" as Catholic by OUR SUNDAY VISITOR magazine, and has decided to drag Agnes with him. Agnes graces the cover and 2 pages trace the spiritual heritage of her humor in the June 25 edition of the national Catholic publication.

Cochran is very comfortable identifying Agnes's faith. "I was born Catholic, raised Catholic, and will live and die my whole life as Catholic. I always intended Agnes to be Catholic, but tried to keep her in the closet about it to make her more universal and likable. I realized though that I wasn't universal or always likable, so why should I give her that advantage? I'm just kidding of course.

"Agnes doesn't go to church, she goes to Mass. She doesn't hear a preacher preach-she hears a priest give a sermon. There have been mentions of saints and rosaries, and there is the ever-present poignancy of striving for spiritual enlightenment while piloting a decidedly mammalian vehicle.

"I've had letters from Catholic priests, Episcopalian priests, nuns, Baptist ministers, existentialists, and even atheists. I've never had anyone take issue with the Catholicism."

In her simplicity and strength, Agnes strikes a cord with anyone who has marched to a different drummer and found triumph in being himself or herself.

I grew up in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and went to Washington University in St. Louis. I came to Cleveland 13 years ago when I took a job as a writer/illustrator for American Greetings. Since then, I've churned out thousands upon gazillions of funny greeting cards for the alternative card line, "Maketplace." During this time I developed a line of my own called "Skitch," which was quite successful. I've also freelanced for AmericanGreetings.com, Egreetings.com, and BlueMountainArts.com. I still work for AG part-time as a contract writer.

Meanwhile, I've tried my hand at getting syndicated. "Got A Life," became weekly syndicated with King Features for two years -- I quit before I had my second child. "The Pajama Diaries" achieved daily syndication and debuted March 27 of '06. It centers on a suburban working mom named Jill and her loved ones. It is presented in a first-person diary format, often combined with dialog.

As far as personal life goes, I'm about to celebrate a ten-year marriage to my wonderful and extremely supportive husband, Michael, who often watches our two rambunctious kids, Mollie (6) and Nikki (3), while I attempt to work at two jobs. At the moment we live in Lyndhurst, OH, a suburb of Cleveland. In the midst of our chaos, we're building a home in Mayfield Heights, OH (also outside of Cleveland) and trying to sell our current house. Hey, anyone in the market for a beige split-level?

Welcome to the GLC, Terri!
