CARTOONIST WANTED

This appeal was forwarded to us by our own Lucy Caswell:

Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005
From: "James E. Fred" <jamesefred@yahoo.com>
Subject: Cartoonist Partner

Lucy,

Thanks for any help you can give me in finding a good cartoonist who can do the whole thing - pencil, ink, color and letter, who has no interest in writing the cartoon and would like to partner with a writer (myself) who already has a great cartoon concept and is close to getting it submitted to the syndicates but now has to have the cartoons!

Thanks again,
Jim Fred
Dayton, Ohio

Your shopping problems are solved! Those draining, time-consuming trips to Old Navy, The Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, etc. etc. are a thing of the past! Everything you need can now be found online at the GLyph Store -- as long as you don't mind your entire wardrobe featuring the image of an anthropomorphic No.2 pencil stub.

While others at the Reuben Awards ceremony in Scottsdale squirm uncomfortably in their seats wearing stiff tuxes and itchy formals, GLC members can look resplendent decked out in our comfy GLyphie Value T-shirts and GLyphie Baseball Jerseys. Well, maybe not. But they'll be nice for lounging around the pool.

Check out the line of apparel and trinkets at http://www.cafepress.com/ncsglc. A percentage of each purchase comes back to the chapter and defrays the cost of the newsletter and website, so order with reckless abandon.

Thanks to honorary GLC spokesmodel Christina Wald. See her artwork at christinawald.com

Check out the Jim Borgman special feature from the Feb. 13 edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer: "Coping With the February Blahs" is Jim's full-page cartoon essay on the doldrums of the second month of the year -- the month that, Borgman says, "brings out the worst in us. Turns us petty. Drains our spirits. Sets our nerves on edge." Despite the downer tone of that quote, the page is tongue-in-cheek in its approach and quite amusing.

The newspaper invites readers to play off of Jim's observations and to send in their own ideas on how to cope with the blahs.

The full-color page is available from the Enquirer website as a downloadable .pdf. Follow this link to Borgman's Enquirer page and click the link just below Jim's editorial cartoon -- the one that says "Special feature: Borgman's February blahs sketchbook."

SPEED BUMPS AHEAD

There's suddenly a bunch of Dave Coverly news to report. The long-awaited second Speed Bump collection, Speed Bump: Cartoons for Idea People was released by ECW Press on December 12. The 200 page book features a 32-page color section, and foreword by Jim Borgman. It's in all the brick & mortar stores, but agoraphobics can order from Dave's own website, or from the GLC Online Bookstore.

Dave will be doing some signings and media appearances in support of the book. He's slated for a March 3 appearance on the Ontario chat show Daytime Toronto, as well as a Toronto book store signing that same day. Also planned, an Ann Arbor book signing in March. We'll post details on the GLG Upcoming Events Calendar as they become available.

Speaking of Calendars, it's not too soon to be thinking about 2006 and the upcoming 16-month Speed Bump Calendar, "More Fun With Speed Bump." The American Greetings product is scheduled for release this summer, and will feature 24 full-color Coverly cartoons.

Also, please note that Dave is the nominee for NCS Membership Chairman. (Have you sent in your vote?)

CARTOONIST WANTED
FOR T-SHIRT LINE

UPDATE / CORRECTION / CLARIFICATION, etc. 1/14/05: Please note, the client in the story below is not bigjohnson.com. Rather, the person asking for cartoons is from a different outfit but wants a style "similar" to the art at bigjohnson.com.

Take a look at bigjohnson.com. Know anybody with this style who might be interested?

Roy Doty has had an inquiry through his website for a cartoonist. The job is not for him ("It's just not my style."), but he thought there might be someone in the chapter who is interested. The inquirer offers "bawdy t-shirts, but not porn," Doty says.

Matt@cobaltrecruiting.com is the contact, and he wants a whole line of shirts so it could be a good assignment.

If interested, call or e-mail Doty - or contact matt@cobaltrecruiting.com directly.

I WANT MY EARL TV

Here's what's up with Earl Musick, who holds the distinction of being the only member of the NCS who doubles as a Postmaster. It's also worth reminding that Earl is the one who founded our Great Lakes Chapter of the NCS. And now -- He's everywhere! Earl says:

"The U S Postal Service has started a program in which they use actual Postmasters as spokespersons in advertising, commercials, and public appearances. I was part of a group of 800 Postmasters from across the country selected to audition. from that group, I made the cut to represent the Northern Ohio area.

"After the first audition, 80 out of 800 postmasters, myself included, were still in the running for national commercials and ads. They flew us to Chicago where we went through a week of auditions and media training. Well I guess they weren't looking for the short, fat, bald look -- I didn't get the national stuff. However for the next 18 months I hold the position of U S Postal Service Ambassador for this part of the country which includes Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, New Jersey, and the Carolinas.

"It's pretty cool. I have been on TV 4 times this week. Made 5 appearances and even dressed up as Santa for channel 3 and 23 news. My photo has been in several Postal and Stamp Publications and there is talk of radio, newspapers, and TV talk shows. Did I mention this is cool? We are promoting www.USPS.com, the flat rate $7.70 Priority box, and the Automated Postal Centers. It's Fast, Easy, and Convenient. It's just another way the U S Postal Service is working for you. AHHH I can't stop !!

"Help me remember my true secret Identity (a cartoonist)!"

Above: Earl as drawn by Earl, by way of Frank L. Baum,
and Earl's photo from one of those USPS publications.

For your viewing pleasure, a little follow-up of the Mid-Ohio Con NewsBlurt from two items below.

MOC was a fun, interesting, worthwhile and exciting event, even if most of the photos don't quite cut it. To be fair, they weren't all blurry and overexposed. Some were underexposed, poorly framed, etc. Anyway, some of the best and some of the not-so good are included here.

Above we see the Hilton Easton in Columbus, Ohio, where the 25th annual Mid-Ohio Con took place on the weekend of November 27-28. For a few more glimpses, click this link.

DARYLL COLLINS WATCH

On the heels of his back cover spotlight on Chris Payne's illustration for the September 2004 Reader's Digest, Daryll Collins got an additional few inches of ink in the Sunday, Sept. 19 edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The piece was "Payne Watch," a public service which appears in the Enquirer periodically to identify the familiar faces that pop up in Chris Payne's Readers Digest back covers.

Daryll was the main focus of "Amateur Hour," a slice of life illustration of a comedy club performer.

Also to be found in the audience and backstage are Daryll's wife, Marilyn, Craig and Laura McKay, and Chris Payne himself.

More about Chris Payne's work for Reader's Digest can be found elsewhere in Newsblurts.

New member Dan Collins made his GLC debut at the Pete Hoffman gathering in Toledo, which he attended with his wife, Vicky.

Dan, an Ashley, Ohio cartoonist, frequents the NCS Wisenheimer board, and his profile there conveniently gives the essential details, making our job easy. Take it away, Dan:

"I have been working as a cartoonist for some 28 years doing magazine cartoons for lots of magazines but mainly for Hustler and it's associated publications. I've done illustrations, some work in books, tabloid covers for Hoot (a Columbus, OH cartoon newspaper), album covers, editorial cartoons for the Delaware, OH Gazette. (I've won 10 first place awards for editorial cartoons and illustrations from the Ohio Associated Press Society). I have been working on and running a strip in the Gazette and doing greeting cards for Noble Works Inc. in New Jersey. I enjoy bass fishing and playing Chet Atkins tunes on the guitar. I am also an amateur orchidist."

Well, we suppose the club can always use another amateur orchidist.

Dan's strip, "Funny Paper," is the latest addition to the GLyph's Comics Page. It's a good laugh, check it out!

Rumor has it that Dan plans to attend the 2004 Festival of Cartoon Art in Columbus, so introduce yourself to him if you haven't yet had the pleasure.

Left: Panel from Dan Collins' Funny Paper strip. In a departure from the usual gag format, this is from a four-part series illustrating a poem by Edward Guest on the joys of fishing.
