WHERE'S JEREMY?

In a new example of one GLC member paying tribute to another, the 5/1/05 FRAZZ by Jef Mallett contains a tastefully understated nod to Jim Borgman and Jerry Scott's ZITS. (Click the strip for a larger presentation.)

YOU WON'T BELIEVE!

Our correspondence with Connie Mutch, daughter of late Cleveland Plain Dealer illustrator Roy Hearn (subject of Ed Black's Flashback profile) has yielded a bit of previously undisclosed horror show minutia:

"One interesting fact about my father is that he was the artist who drew the pictures of Ghoulardi (the famous SHOCK THEATER movie host in Cleveland in the 60's). He was "moonlighting" for Newschannel 8 at the time, so he used a pen name. The name he used was W.J. Wentling, which stood for WJW (channel 8) and Wentling was my mother's maiden name.  I recently saw a whole book that was published about Ghoulardi and saw the pen name all through it. I guess I can't get him in trouble now for moonlighting! It's pretty cool finding this stuff on ebay and there's even a Ghoulardi's bar in Lorain, with this picture painted as a mural on the wall.  I guess there are a lot of Ghoulardi fans out there."

GLC member Craig McKay may just have something here: People like dogs, people like sports, and people wear t-shirts. So Craig has shrewdly created a fusion of all three and the result is http://skydoggie.com, a site featuring his line of t-shirts featuring dogs playing sports!

While you're clicking around the Internet, you might like to browse the fun stuff in Craig's personal website, monkeywithcrayon.com!

BOOK SCOREBOARD

Chris Payne illustrates picture books faster than we can write about them. He's got two new ones out since last we blinked, both with a baseball theme. First up is "The Legend of The Curse of The Bambino," written by Dan Shaugnessy, followed by "The Shot Heard 'Round the World," with text by Phil Bildner. Both new titles are published by Simon and Schuster, and will look nice on the bookshelf next to Chris' other baseball books, "Mighty Jackie the Strikeout Queen," "Shoeless Joe & Black Betsy," and "Casey At the Bat." All are available to order at the GLC Online Bookstore, as are new additions by other GLC members.

For the record, recently added to the bookstore are:

THRASHED: Zits Sketchbook #9 Jim Borgman, Illustrator; Jerry Scott, Writer

I HAVE TAMPERED WITH THE DIVINE PLAN: Agnes #2 Tony Cochran

BIG TOP BOOK IS OUT

UPDATE 4/7/05: "Hey, everybody! Just a quick note to let you know that the first Big Top collection is now available. If your local bookstore doesn't have it, they can order it and get it in really quickly... It's also available from Amazon.com, or whatever online bookstore thingy you prefer. It's new! It's funny! It has that "new book smell"! So, let's get out there and make this a best-seller, people!! We're gonna stomp all over that Harry Potter kid! -Yours truly, Dusty Poodle "

Big Top, the circus-themed strip by GLC's Rob Harrell, is making inroads. Rob is pleased to report that he's recently gained a few new papers, notably in Boston and in Melbourne, Australia. And, as mentioned above, it's now available in book form.

The book, published by Andrews McMeel, collects Big Top in chronological order from the earliest days of the strip. Rob has written a new foreword for the volume and has also included a special "bloopers" feature.

The Big Top book can be ordered through our GLC Online Bookstore.

Rob also notes that he's shifted the focus of the strip slightly, now regularly using it as a vehicle to comment upon and skewer pop culture events and icons. He's enjoyed doing those types of storylines in the past, and they've always been well-received.

Rob Harrell has issued the first edition of "Sawdust and Greasepaint," a newsletter dedicated to the latest Big Top developments. Click the link below to download your own copy as a .doc file.

MALLETT MOLDS YOUNG SKULLS FULL OF MUSH

Here at The GLyph, we can't remember who our commencement speaker was, at least from high school days. And college, um, did we even go? Chances are we wouldn't have had any such memory lapses if our graduation speaker had been someone cool, like a cartoonist, like the GLC's Jef Mallett. The Frazz creator does the honors at the University of Michigan-Flint commencement ceremonies, 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 1 at the Perani Arena and Event Center. Congratulations to Jef for making cartoonists seem almost respectable!

CARTOON NETWORKING

Dan Davis is pencilling a succession of Cartoon Network characters for a Sunday page-style strip running in the weekly paper El Pais, published in Spain. The assignment requires flexibility. "We began with Dexter's Laboratory and then went into Powerpuff Girls and then Code Name: Kids Next Door. Each one runs for about five strips in rotation." Kevin Bricklin at Warner Bros. produces the strip with Jennifer Keating (writer), Jorge Pacheo (inks) and Clydene Nee (colorist).

"ORPHAN WORK" PETITION

The GLC's Chris Payne is calling attention to an issue that should be of interest to all cartoonists. It concerns changes to the copyright laws that allow "orphan work" by living artists (namely, copyrighted works whose owners are difficult or impossible to locate) to fall easily into public domain.

GLC members are urged to read the newsfeed item, "U.S. Copyright Office Orphan Works Study" at the Illustrators' Partnership of America site, and to consider signing the related petition.

The e-mail address for the petition is:

info@illustratorspartnership.org

The IPA requests that when you e-mail them to use "add my name" as the subject line and to give your full name and country.

The requested date for responses was March 20. They are still accepting additions to the petition but please, act sooner rather than later.

Thanks to Chuck Rekow.

COVERLY CAPTION CONTEST

Perusers of Monday, March 14th's Speed Bump noticed that Dave Coverly is holding a caption contest in honor of his book signing tour -- that book being Speed Bump: Cartoons for Idea People (as mentioned in our NewsBlurt of 1/25/05). Figure out what the above ape is saying and win signed books, original art and maybe more! Of course, talking apes are inherently funny anyway, so having it say something witty and humorous is really gilding the lily. Deadline is May 15!

Also, keep an eye out for Dave at a book store near you. Appearances are planned for Bloomington and Indianapolis, Indiana, Washington, DC and Cincinnati Ohio.

For details on the above, and all the latest Speed Bump news, see speedbump.com

Artwork by GLC members has often been sighted on cocktail napkins, but until Jenny Campbell, none had ever before been seen adorning license plates.

Jenny, the GLC's newest member, is the pen behind "Flo & Friends," the Creators Syndicate-distributed strip which tracks the lives of an ensemble group of senior citizens.

In addition to her gig on Flo, Jenny is a prolific children's illustrator. Some children's book titles to her credit are "Spike's Erie Adventure," "Lazy Daisy," and, most recently, "Max Rules." "Lazy Daisy" was included on the American Booksellers' Association's "Pick of the List" as one of the year's best children's books, and was chosen by Barnes & Noble Booksellers as one of its national notable books in December of 2000.

Jenny is a tireless volunteer for the Geauga (County) Humane Society's Rescue Village, east of Cleveland, contributing time, effort and artwork. It was that connection which led her to donate the artwork that now appears on Ohio's newest specialty license plate a "Pet Plate" advocating spay-and-neuter, and benefiting scores of Ohio's humane organizations.

She shares a refurbished century house in the village of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, with her 12-year-old cat, and is surrogate mother to three dogs. Jenny heads back home to Arizona as often as possible, which suggests that the Reuben festivities in Scottsdale might be in her future, and a good opportunity for some of us to meet her face to face.
