GLC Visit to Dayton, Ohio VA Medical Center
(Scroll down for Cleveland info)

12:30 p.m. - Meet at Dayton VA for lunch and briefing
1:30 p.m. - Visit with patients - Sketches and conversation
Afterward - Frank & Janet Pauer's place (see below)

This visit is part of the NCS's national effort, organized by member Jeff Bacon, to show support for our troops. Sharon Croteau, Chief, Voluntary Service in Dayton, says the nursing home care unit which we will be visiting on Saturday, April 29 has about 90 patients in the building at present. She also says "this will be really exciting for them."

IF YOU CAN PARTICIPATE, PLEASE CONTACT CRAIG BY TUESDAY, APRIL 25

DIRECTIONS:
The Dayton VA Medical Center is located off of I-35 West at the corner of I-35 and Liscum Rd. (PLEASE don't mapquest because it takes you to an entrance that is no longer there) From Cincinnati: Take I-75 North to I-35 West and exit at Liscum Rd. (there are traffic lights) Turn right on Liscum, right again into the VA. At the first stop sign, turn right and follow that road to where it makes a sharp left turn. The Nursing Home (Building 320) is on the right hand side of the road.

(NOTE: The building is marked Building 320, there is a maroon awning that leads you to the front door and also states "Nursing Home Care" on the end facing the parking lot.)

 FYI:

These VA and military hospital visits date back to the earliest origins of the National Cartoonists Society -- and, in fact, the NCS grew out of a gathering of cartoonists who had assembled to entertain troops under the auspices of the USO during World War II. The first page of R.C. Harvey's article in the back of your 2005 National Cartoonists Society Album tells how it came about. So, participate in this NCS tradition if you can.

The ever-gracious Frank and Janet Pauer, who live a short hop from the VA, have offered to open their home to the group for a casual get-together after we're done at the hospital. You never know how much great comic strip art and how many vintage comic strip book collections Frank's accumulated since last time, so it's worth making a stop for that reason alone!

 CLEVELAND

The Cleveland VA visit is also a go. Polly Keener has done a great job of getting this organized very quickly. Please participate if you can, and let Polly know (as soon as possible!) to expect you.

Meet at the VA Medical center at 3:00 p.m.

As with the simultaneous visit taking place in Dayton, this Cleveland visit will involve meeting with patients, doing sketches or caricatures, chatting and letting them chat with us. It'll be very play-it-by-ear. If the situation lends itself, you might also do a group presentation in an activity room. But likewise, it'll be casual and off the cuff.

Many of these patients will be older, and long-term patients from Korea, the Gulf War, etc. Probably not too many from the current conflicts abroad.

Please contact Polly Keener with any questions you might have.
