WAYNO Exhibition: Animalia Astrologica: The Chinese Zodiac

Gypsy Cafe
1330 Bingham St.
Pittsburgh, PA

Gypsy Café Announces Exhibition of New Works by Wayno

PITTSBURGH Following Squaresville, last summer's sold-out art show at Zombo Gallery in Lawrenceville, local artist Wayno returns with his latest exhibit, Animalia Astrologica: The Chinese Zodiac, opening February 5, 2008 at the Gypsy Café on the South Side.

Animalia Astrologica is a series of twelve paintings, representing the animal signs of the traditional Chinese zodiac.

Late last year, Gypsy Café owner Melanie Evankovich invited Wayno to show some of his work in her funky, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant, and the two collaborated to develop a theme appropriate to the space. "When we settled on an early February date for the opening, I immediately thought of Chinese New Year," said the artist. "It seemed to fit with the Café's irreverent mystical vibe." Evankovich agreed, saying, "We have a Tarot card reader here twice a week, and the Year of the Rat begins on February 7, so when Wayno suggested a set of astrological pictures, I knew we had the perfect motif."

The paintings, in Wayno's distinctive cartoon pop style, use a limited palate consisting mainly of the traditional red and gold colors of the Chinese New Year. The animals depicted are anything but traditional they're shown behaving like Westerners at New Year's time. We see a snake drinking champagne, pigs kissing at midnight, a dragon with a hangover, and an ox making a list of resolutions.

Wayno is a cartoonist, illustrator, and writer based in Pittsburgh. His clients include The New Yorker, Nickelodeon Magazine, Rhino Records, McGraw-Hill Books, Entertainment Weekly, The Guardian, Pittsburgh City Paper, Table, and The New York Times. He is a member of the National Cartoonists Society and the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators, and is a founding board member of the ToonSeum, Pittsburgh's museum of the cartoon arts.

Animalia Astrologica runs from February 5 through March 30, 2008 at the Gypsy Café, located at 1330 Bingham Street on the South Side. The café is open for lunch Tuesday through Friday, and for dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Complete restaurant hours are posted at www.gypsycafe.net

CAROL TYLER: Sepia Tome: Telling Dad's World War II Story

021L Wexner Center, 27 West 17th Avenue Mall
Adjacent to the Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library

Comic artist Carol Tyler will discuss her upcoming book Sepia Tome: Telling Dad's World War II Story.  Tyler's comics first appeared in Weirdo and Wimmen's Comix twenty years ago.  Since then she has contributed to numerous comics anthologies and published two solo works, The Job Thing in 1993 and Late Bloomer in 2005.   Late Bloomer presents a rich and powerful collection of Tyler's autobiographical comic stories beautifully published in color by Fantagraphics.

In the introduction to Late Bloomer, Robert Crumb writes, "She is tops, in my book, one of the best artists alive and working in the comics medium. She has fine aesthetic instincts... Her drawings are always pleasing to look at, warm, delicate, inviting. Yet the content, the stories, are all about gritty reality, the hard struggles of common, everyday life." For more information about Carol Tyler, see her website: www.bloomerland.com.

Tyler's presentation is co-sponsored by the Cartoon Research Library, Project Narrative, Department of Women's Studies and the Department of History's Harvey Goldberg Program for Excellence in Teaching

This event is part of Storytelling 2007: A Celebration of Graphic Narrative, a special year of events and exhibitions celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of master-storyteller Milton Caniff, the founding donor of the Cartoon Research Library.  Caniff was the creator of the comic strips Terry and the Pirates and Steve Canyon.

Exhibition: TO BE CONTINUED: COMIC STRIP STORYTELLING

The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library
27 West 17th Avenue Mall
Columbus, OH

Will Annie be reunited with Daddy Warbucks? Will L'il Abner ever marry Daisy Mae? Will Pogo win the election? Find out in tomorrow's paper! To Be Continued: Comic Strip Storytelling presents compelling continuity stories from a century of newspaper comic strips. The exhibition, on display in the Cartoon Research Library's Reading Room from June 18 to August 24, 2007, features ten examples of stories from the funnies that kept Americans talking, speculating, and, most importantly, buying newspapers.

The stories chosen for this exhibition represent the evolution, the variety and the impact of continuity storytelling in newspaper comics over the last century. This exhibit is part of Storytelling 2007, a year-long celebration of graphic narrative, commemorating the centennial of the birth of master storyteller, Milton Caniff. Caniff is not included in this exhibition because the Cartoon Research Library will be mounting a retrospective exhibition of his work in the fall.

Film: "Tintin et Moi"

Wexner Center For the Arts, Ohio State University
Video/Film Theater
1871 North High Street
Columbus, OH 43210-1393

Tintin et Moi explores the appeal and style of a legendary European comic strip and character through extensive interviews with artist Herge (the pen name of Georges Remi).

Cosponsored by Ohio State's Cartoon Research Library as part of its year-long event "Storytelling 2007: A Celebration of Graphic Narrative."

As recognizable in Europe as Superman or Mickey Mouse in the U.S., the character of Tintin appeared in print across Europe for more than five decades beginning in 1929. Tintin et Moi draws on 14 hours of interviews conducted in 1971 with Herge, who created the comic strip The Adventures of Tintin. The film examines the artist's signature graphic style, as well as the unparalleled popularity of the Tintin character and his fantastic adventures set around the world. (75 mins, video)

Reuben Division Judging
Saturday, February 26, 2005 12:30 PM  est
1107 Goodman St Pittsburgh, PA 15218-1116

This coming Saturday, February 26, 2005, the chapter will be again casting votes for the Reuben awards - this time in the Newspaper Illustration division.

Our friend David Coulson in Pittsburgh has graciously offered up his home for the Reuben division judging. If you can make the trip - and haven't entered your work in the Newspaper Illustration Division - we'd love to see you there! (You can RSVP David at 412-243-7064 or david@davidcoulson.com). Our distinguished vice-chair Tony Cochran will be seeing that the voting runs smoothly. Even if you haven't been selected to be on the jury this year (we make it a point to rotate the juries and try to have all-new judges every year) your voice is still important to the chapter.

Please join David at his house at 12:30 PM on February 26 and be ready to enjoy and discuss great newspaper illustrations from across the NCS!

OCTOBER 15, 2004 (opening) through JANUARY 7, 2005

"Sensitive Subjects: Contemporary Editorial Cartooning in Ohio"

Thurber Center Gallery, 91 Jefferson Ave, Columbus OH 43215 (next door to Thurber House)

Opening reception (cohosted by the Great Lakes Chapter of the National Cartoonists' Society): Friday, October 15, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Exhibition open after Oct. 15 by appointment only; contact Laura Bidwa at 614 464-1032, ext. 16, or lbidwa@thurberhouse.org

Four of the best Ohio editorial cartoonists currently in print will present their work at the Thurber Center Gallery this fall in "Sensitive Subjects." Artists featured will be Jim Borgman (Cincinnati Enquirer), David Catrow (Springfield News-Sun), Chip Bok (Akron Beacon Journal), and Jeff Stahler (recently of the Cincinnati Post - with the Columbus Dispatch as of Sept. 1). This exhibition is intended to serve as part of the discussion of censorship, self-censorship, and editorial control in cartoon art in the eighth triennial OSU Festival of Cartoon Art, entitled "Deletions, Omissions, and Erasures." Each of the four artists will select approximately 10 works that have proven particularly sensitive for them, whether because of their subjects or other circumstances of their creation. The exhibition will include the artists' comments on why and how each piece qualifies as "sensitive," with the goal of presenting a nuanced view of how the broad notion of "censorship" realistically touches (or may be largely absent from) the lives of working editorial cartoonists.
